As medical provider networks have become a standard feature of workers’ compensation systems over the past two decades, a new WCRI study examines how these networks affect medical payments, access to care, and the use of medical services.
The study also looks at broader claim outcomes, including disability duration, indemnity benefits, and total claim costs, and compares how network effects differ in rural and urban areas.
The analysis is based on a matched comparison of in‑network and out‑of‑network claims with more than seven days of lost work time. This approach allows for a meaningful evaluation of differences in outcomes. The study also explores how state policy choices influence the effectiveness of medical provider networks.
