This 20th edition of CompScope™ Medical Benchmarks provides information for Virginia policymakers and stakeholders on multiple measures of system performance. The analysis shows how Virginia medical prices for nonhospital services changed after the medical fee schedule was implemented on January 1, 2018.

Other metrics reflect information prior to implementation of the medical fee schedule in Virginia. We compare various components of workers’ compensation medical payments in Virginia with similar measures from 17 other states.

Among the main components of medical costs, we highlight utilization of medical services and prices paid for those services across multiple providers of medical services. We also discuss drivers of changes in medical costs per claim from 2012 to 2017 (evaluated in early 2018). We analyze claims with experience through 2018 for injuries up to and including 2017, and in some cases, we use a longer time frame to supply historical context.
