JOHN JONES SCHOLAR
IN
WORKERS’ COMPENSATION RESEARCH
Applications
are currently being accepted for the John Jones Scholar in
Workers’ Compensation Research. The goal of the award is to
stimulate interest in workers’ compensation research among
researchers. The John Jones Scholar will receive a grant of $10,000.
The application deadline is June 1, 2012. The award is
expected to be made by August 1, 2012, for the 12 months beginning
September 1, 2012.
BACKGROUND:
This
award was created by the Workers Compensation Research Institute’s
(WCRI) Board of Directors to recognize the many important
contributions of John Jones, one of the founders of WCRI. As Senior
Vice President and General Counsel of Wausau Insurance Companies,
Mr. Jones was a WCRI Board member from 1983 through 1998. He served in numerous leadership positions at WCRI, including
Chair of the Board of Directors, and helped to shape the success
of the Institute in many ways. Throughout his service to WCRI, Mr.
Jones
has embodied the Institute’s core values: the importance of unbiased,
credible, practical and useful public policy research.
ABOUT WCRI:
The
Workers Compensation Research Institute is an independent, not for
profit research organization providing high quality, objective
information about public policy issues involving workers’
compensation systems. The reports and testimony of WCRI act as a
catalyst for constructive change in improving workers’
compensation systems throughout the
U.S.
and
internationally. In the
twenty-seven years since the Institute was organized, WCRI has published
over 250 books on a wide variety of important workers’
compensation issues. As the Institute’s reputation for objectivity
has grown, more policy makers are looking to the Institute as a
source of information to help them make informed decisions about
legislation and administrative change.
OBJECTIVE:
To
stimulate interest in workers’ compensation research and
facilitate creation of important, new, publishable research.
REQUIREMENTS:
-
No
experience with workers’ compensation research necessary.
-
Discipline
in economics, law, statistics, public health, public policy or
other social sciences.
-
Available
to university faculty or graduate students, researchers in
government or research organizations, and researchers in private
companies or labor organizations.
-
May
be used for new research projects, to expand the scope of a
current research project, for doctoral dissertation support or
for a Scholar-in-Residence at WCRI in
Cambridge,
MA.

Scholar-in-Residence
may access WCRI’s extensive database for his or her research.
SELECTION CRITERIA:

Policy
significance of the proposed work.
-
Feasibility
of conducting proposed research within stated timeframes and
resources.
-
Contribution
to knowledge base.
-
Likelihood
of publication.
-
Synergy
with other WCRI work.
Applicants
proposing to spend time at WCRI offices in
Cambridge,
Massachusetts,
or intending to
publish research results as a WCRI report will be given preference.
However, this is not a requirement.
